Do You Know Dick?

Philip K. Dick that is. If you don't know who he is you should. In my opinion Dick is the Father of Modern Science Fiction. Unfortunately his work has been pillaged and raped by Hollywood over the past few years in films such as Minority Report, Paycheck and Next. These "adaptations" barely resembled the genius that was Dick. The film A Scanner Darkly, was at least an attempt to remain faithful, but got convoluted in its film making. Probably the most famous Dick adaptation was BladeRunner based on Dick's story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. His stories and plot lines have been the inspiration for The Matrix, Terminator, and Battlestar Galactica.

Most of Dick's novels and short stories dealt with either totalitarian government, giant corporations and blurring realities. It probably helped that Dick was known to use drugs and was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. I think now more than ever Dick's work is relevant to what's happening. If you're not familiar with Dick I would recommend picking up one of many compilations of his short stories before diving into one of his novels such as The Man in the High Castle or Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said.
